Lincoln County Public Health Department, in conjunction with Lincoln Health Hospital, will be conducting a free COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic Friday, March 5th and Saturday, March 6th.

Lincoln County Public Health is confirmed to receive 1,100 doses of the recently approved Johnson & Johnson one-dose COVID-19 vaccine (also known as the Janssen or J & J Vaccine) this week.

The goal is to vaccinate over 500 people each day.

The Janssen vaccine is a recombinant vector vaccine that uses human adenovirus to express the spike protein found on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. The adenovirus vector used in the Janssen vaccine has been modified so that it can not replicate in humans and cause illness.

This vaccine is a welcome addition to our arsenal in fighting coronavirus. The one dose vaccine produces peak immunities in individuals vaccinated 28 days after vaccination.

Although touted as less effective in preventing contraction of the virus, the Janssen vaccine was tested among 45,000 volunteers, and proved to be:

77% effective in preventing severe/critical COVID-19 occurring at least 14 days after vaccination and

85% effective in preventing severe/critical COVID-19 occurring at least 28 days after vaccination.

The vaccine is 100% effective in preventing against death from the disease everywhere it was tested. In addition to meeting safety and effectiveness standards to receive emergency approval, the J & J vaccine is critical in getting control of the pandemic, getting ahead of viral mutations and protecting our rural community.

To put the effectiveness numbers in perspective, in any given year, the flu vaccine is only 40-60% effective, yet still highly recommended, especially in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and immune compromised.

This weekends vaccine clinics will be held as following:

Limon Public School East-Side Dirt Parking Lot

912 Badger Way, Limon, CO 80828
